ASES National Houston Solar Tour & Social

The ASES National Solar Tour is the largest grassroots solar event in the nation and Houston will be a participant in 2018 as it has in many years past.  The tour involved over 30,000 participants in 2017 in more than 60 cities nationwide.

Solar Tour in Cypress!
The Solar Tour gives YOU the opportunity to see and learn firsthand about Solar Systems on the homes of Houstonians who have already taken the step towards clean energy. Solar installers, homeowners, and volunteers are available at each home location to discuss benefits, cost, and any other questions regarding solar energy and green technologies.

In addition to the homes, there will be a variety of vendors with cool energy efficient technologies at the tour and free breakfast treats for the early birds.  The Solar Tour is free and open to the public. Following the tour, the after party is at The Bearded Fox Brewery  where we’ll have a few beers, talk solar and listen to some live music from the Boomerays

Site Descriptions

The Hilberg Residence – 16530 Steinhagen Road, Cypress, Tx 77429

The Hilberg Residence is a Certified LEED Platinum home that has the highest green building certification available in the US. It consists of three buildings: a main house and guest quarters/garage designed to be passively energy efficient, comfortable, and built to last using ICFs (insulated concrete forms). The main house and quarters have concrete tile roofing, and a rainwater harvesting system for landscaping and gardening purposes. Highly efficient on-demand water heaters, lighting, mechanical cooling and heating systems, plumbing fixtures and appliances were installed. The third building is a barn that also houses the PV solar system.

The architect’s signature eaDesign for Life passive sustainability and resilience features were designed-in to combine natural day-lighting with natural ventilative cooling abilities along with enhanced indoor air quality and extended durability. The home’s passive design features will allow the owners to become independent from the energy grid when desired. The design also enables the owners to greatly extend the number of months they can live comfortably without having to use their highly efficient mini-split cooling heating & systems. While situated nearby Cypress Creek, the home was not flooded by Hurricane Harvey.

The Hilberg residence will also feature a beautiful 18 ’ x 1 2′ Solar Outdoor Living (SOL) Pergola in classic Western Red Cedar constructed using 8″ x 8″ solid posts and 2″ x 10″ rafters. This functional structure provides approximately 200 sq.ft. of covered outdoor living area. The SOL Pergola provides up to 3.6 KW of production capacity, with 2 KW of backup power when using the optional SMA Sunny Boy 3.5 Inverter.

Houston Solar Tour_project site 2

The Solar Tour’s mission is to raise awareness of solar energy and provide an opportunity for the public to see solar systems in action. The organizers, made up of Houston’s dedicated green leadership, seek to inspire individuals to make sustainable energy choices. We can all benefit from lower utility costs, energy independence, protection from power outages and reduced carbon emissions. Solar energy systems highlighted during the tour include both active and passive solar systems. The Houston Solar Tour is part of the national initiative of the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) and other groups with the objective of promoting renewable energy and energy independence.
